I Am The Groon

Nothing I can do about it. I am the Groon.

The Groon

Just when you feel you have suffered enough, here comes the Groon to challenge and trouble you even further. You know, being a creative person is weird. Over the past few decades I found myself writing little campfire songs, working them out in my journal, practicing them until I feel it is right, and then recording it. After a while I noticed too many of my songs are very serious heart felt songs that folk would use the word poignant to describe. I wanted to deviate from that path for a bit and get into something fun and fresh.

I started out listening to the music Mark Harvey and I recorded as Rain Station, and decided that the Dark Ride album was my favorite because of the raw energy, fun party vibe, sense of humor, and immediacy. We made the whole thing up in the studio and came out with a really fun album in just a few days time. Dark Ride is epic, and most of the album is animated at JackOLantern.ORG.

I wanted to include some of the unusual influences I have lurking inside me. My love for Muppets, Betty Boop, Mel Blanc, Sponge Bob, Ween, Bowie, early 80’s Punk, Sid & Marty Krofft, Teletubbies, old radio shows like Inner Sanctum Mystery, Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Planet of the Apes, Kolchak the Night Stalker, Circle of Fear, Brothers Quay, Weird Tales Magazine, MAD Magazine, National Lampoon Magazine, Freak Brothers, R. Crumb, Shel Silverstein, Monty Python, Steve Martin, and Cheech & Chong. I love the characters, the voices, and all the weirdness these folks brought to my quiet hum drum life growing up on a small Maine farm.

I put a little of all those influences into a rock and roll experience I would like to call, Groon Radio.

A Groon has moved into town and all the locals are a little upset. There’s no room in this town for no Groon. This ain’t Groontown. Tune into Groon Radio and find out what happens next!
